STABILA Provides Tool Solution To Agricultural Sector

STABILA laser technology provides Civil Engineering company with innovative solution to assist with crop growth and water-saving initiative.

Farming applications have advanced well beyond simple tractors and irrigation systems. As the global population continues to grow, so too does the demand for food supplies. This increase in demand has necessitated that farmers find innovative solutions to help streamline and optomise their agricultural processes and reduce costs. STABILA proved to be an invaluable addition to Thutlwa Civils who were contracted to assist in a local agricultural project where it was planned to plant 100ha of tomatoes, as well as to create a water run-off catchment area.

Before work could commence the team needed to find a solution on how to slow the water run-off rate. The hill on which the planting was due to take place needed to be contoured from a 12° to a 2° angle. This meant the team needed to set up markers for a grader to create water run-off channels at the correct angle so that all rainwater could be diverted via the channels and stored in the water catchment area. Without the correct level of grading the water run-off rate would cause severe soil erosion making it impossible for any crop growth and the water catchment would be ineffective.

Traditionally a dumpy level and levelling rod would be used for such applications, but the team needed to overcome human error issues, time constraints and communication problems that arise when working over long distances and unequal ground. STABILA’s LAR 350 rotational laser, which is equipped with dual-axes slope functionality, proved to be the ideal solution saving time and reducing the risk for errors. It is thanks to the innovative LAR 350 laser that the work shifted from being a multi-person job that would take several days to a one-person application.

The team here at Upat is dedicated to working with our customers to solve problems quickly and effectively ensuring that no time or money is wasted in each step of the process.

Our STABILA Product Specialist, Charl Weber notes that “with a dumpy level inserting the rods which indicated the level of grading needed took over 3 hours and a lot of shouting, whereas with the LAR 350 STABILA laser the job was done in 20 minutes”.
